AI WORKFORCE

Bezos wants more humans

Jeff Bezos has pushed back against fears that AI will replace large numbers of workers, arguing it could actually increase demand for human labour.

Speaking at VivaTech Paris, the Amazon founder said he “totally disagrees” with the idea that AI will make people redundant.

Instead, he believes the technology will remove barriers, create new opportunities and possibly lead to a labour shortage.

His comments come as concerns grow over AI’s impact on jobs.

Former UK prime minister Rishi Sunak recently said AI is already affecting young people’s job prospects, while the Trades Union Congress has warned that workers could lose out if the benefits mainly go to shareholders.

Bezos also spoke about Prometheus, his new AI venture focused on speeding up physical manufacturing, as AI moves beyond chatbots and into factories, robots and other real-world systems.

Three things stood out:

  • Bezos believes AI could create more demand for workers.

  • He also used the event to discuss his wider space ambitions, including plans for a permanent human presence on the Moon.

  • Unitree’s brain-controlled robot demo showed AI entering the physical world, because apparently chatbots were no longer dramatic enough.

Bezos also said the Moon could become a permanent base for humans, with future technology helping turn lunar resources into rocket fuel.

The bigger theme was clear, AI is starting to move into robots, factories, rockets, and the physical world. Completely normal conference behaviour, obviously.

Bezos casually moving from AI labour shortages to permanent Moon bases is exactly why billionaires should have a maximum of three whiteboards per room.- MG
