Beyond the search bar

Google is testing a new way to search on YouTube that feels more like asking a question than typing keywords.

The feature, called Ask YouTube, gives users written summaries alongside video results, Shorts, and suggested follow-up questions.

For now, it is only available to YouTube Premium users in the US who are 18 or older.

When users search a topic, Ask YouTube creates a results page with a short explanation, key details, and grouped videos.

For example, a search about Apollo 11 showed a summary of the mission, related videos, Shorts, and prompts for follow-up questions.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Ask YouTube combines AI summaries with videos, Shorts, and follow-up prompts.

  • It is currently being tested with US YouTube Premium users aged 18 and over.

  • The tool can be useful, but users still need to check facts.

Shorts meet summaries

The feature seems useful for quick research, but it is not perfect.

In one test, YouTube gave incorrect information about Valve’s old Steam Controller, showing that AI-generated search results still need to be checked.

Google says it is working on bringing the feature to non-Premium users too, which suggests Ask YouTube could become a bigger part of how people search on the platform.
