Apps are soooo 2025
OpenAI may be looking beyond earbuds and into smartphones.
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company could be working with MediaTek, Qualcomm and Luxshare on a phone built around AI agents rather than traditional apps.
The idea is simple: instead of opening different apps to get things done, users could ask AI agents to complete tasks directly.
By building its own device, OpenAI would also have more control over how its AI works, instead of relying on Apple or Google’s mobile systems.
In brief:
OpenAI is reportedly exploring an AI-first smartphone
The phone could use AI agents instead of traditional apps
Mass production may not begin until 2028
Siri was found crying
Kuo says the phone could use both on-device AI and cloud-based models, depending on the task.
He also suggests the device may be designed to better understand user context and habits.
Specs and suppliers could be finalised by late 2026 or early 2027, with mass production possibly starting in 2028.
OpenAI has not commented.
