APPLE AI

Apple researchers have recently introduced several new AI models that hint at how artificial intelligence might be used in future iPhones.

Apple has traditionally been quiet about its AI plans, in contrast to other tech companies that have quickly adopted AI features.

However, CEO Tim Cook has recently spoken about significant investments in generative AI, with more details possibly being shared at Apple’s next Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

The new "OpenELM" or "Open-source Efficient Language Models," are small AI models designed for specific tasks.

They are meant to work right on devices like the iPhone, improving performance and ensuring privacy by avoiding the need for cloud processing.

Your iPhone is about to get WAY smarter

This approach suggests that Apple is aiming to add more AI functions to its devices, focusing on efficiency and privacy.

For example, the latest Apple Watch has been updated to handle more data on-device, which helps make AI features like Siri more responsive and reliable.

In short:

  • Apple is concentrating on compact, efficient AI models that work on the devices themselves, which supports its privacy goals.

  • Apple’s next Developers Conference might reveal how these AI models will be used in its products.

  • Apple's AI improvements could make tasks like writing emails and editing photos faster and easier on iPhones.

These new AI assistants better be prepared to deal with the existential crisis of being trapped inside a phone (Alexa, Siri, I feel your pain).

AI DATA

All AI initiatives rely on data to build models, but access to high-quality data that is clean, complete and context-specific that powers these processes is hard to come by.

That is why organizations are turning to Gretel, the leading synthetic data platform, as a valuable solution enabled by genAI to overcome challenges with data access, quality, and availability.

NETFLIX

The documentary "What Jennifer Did," quickly rose to the top of Netflix's charts - but it has sparked controversy over its use of images.

Some viewers noticed odd discrepancies in the images, such as unnatural facial features and strange artefacts - typical of AI image generators.

This led to suspicions that these images might have been created with AI, especially since the documentary's credits didn't mention any use of AI technologies.

Jeremy Grimaldi, a crime reporter who contributed research and footage to the documentary, spoke to the Toronto Star to clarify the situation.

He confirmed that the photos used in the documentary were genuine photos of Jennifer Pan, the film's subject.

Can you trust what you see?

He noted that some photos were edited, but this was to protect the identity of those who provided the images, not to distort the truth.

Photographer Joe Foley speculated that the documentary makers might have used AI to enhance old, low-quality photos to make them clearer for TV viewing.

He criticised the lack of disclosure about these alterations, pointing out that altering images in a documentary can lead to controversy since the goal is to show things as they actually happened.

What you should know:

  • The documentary was criticised for potentially using AI to edit images, which wasn't disclosed.

  • The images were confirmed to be real but edited for privacy reasons - potentially using AI.

  • The need for transparency in how images are altered in documentaries was highlighted.

So basically, it’s real… but it’s edited with AI… but it’s not AI… anyone else confused?

This includes stringent measures for content moderation, user privacy, and safety. Specifically, Shein must address the sale of illegal items on its platform by submitting a risk assessment and implementing measures to prevent the sale of counterfeit and unsafe products.
