APPLE

Apple's upcoming WWDC 2024 will focus on practical AI features rather than flashy demos like those from Google, Microsoft, or OpenAI, it is being reported.

Expect Apple to introduce basic yet useful AI tools, such as transcribing voice memos and auto-generating emojis. Here’s a sneak preview of that feature: 🐸

Wasn’t that fun?

Additionally, a rumoured partnership with OpenAI could see deeper chatbot integration into Apple’s operating systems.

Recent rumours suggest Apple is working on agreements with Google to integrate their AI, Gemini, and talks are ongoing with Anthropic.

Apple is aiming to keep its AI approach practical and user-friendly.

One significant improvement Apple will reportedly announce is the Smart Recap feature.

This will summarise missed texts, notifications, web pages, news articles, documents, notes, and other forms of media, making it easier to catch up on what you missed.

The Voice Memo app could also get a boost with AI-generated transcripts.

This will be useful for referring to interview recordings and helpful for students recording lessons for later reference.

Apple devices already offer similar features, like auto-generated voicemail transcripts and system-wide captions for videos, audio, and conversations.

Here’s what Apple’s updates will hold:

  • Smart Recap for summarising missed information.

  • AI-generated Voice Memo transcripts.

  • Enhanced Spotlight search and Safari capabilities.

Useful over showy

Apple also plans to announce AI-powered improvements to on-device Spotlight search, internet searches with Safari, as well as writing suggestions for emails and texts.

Apple could showcase a better, more natural-sounding voice for Siri, based on its own large language models, and improved Siri functionality on the Apple Watch.

Where possible, Apple’s devices will perform these tasks locally, but more complex processes will be handled by Apple’s M2 Ultra-based servers.

Most new on-device AI features will be available on devices released in the last year or so.

Apart from AI features, Apple may announce an iOS 18 feature allowing users to change their app icon colours directly, offering more personalisation without using the Shortcuts app.

Additionally, a rumoured home screen update could let users place app icons wherever they like, rather than being forced into a top-to-bottom, left-to-right arrangement.

Leaders in AI

Greg Brockman

Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, epitomises the "10x engineer" of Silicon Valley, undertaking 60 to 100-hour work weeks, primarily coding, significantly amplifying his team's productivity.

A former Harvard and MIT student, and chief technology officer at Stripe, Brockman left to establish OpenAI in 2015, driven by broader ambitions to magnify the company's overall output.

He dedicates considerable time to tackling OpenAI’s critical challenges and strategic blockages, upgrading its efficiency and effectiveness.

Brockman also navigates significant issues like AI safety, advocating for the "iterative deployment" of AI models to learn and adapt quickly from real-world applications.

This approach to gradual deployment, he believes, is crucial for responsibly scaling AI technologies, even as OpenAI faces competition and critique over its decisions.

AI IN HOLLYWOOD

If you noticed the striking resemblance between child actor Alyla Browne and Anya Taylor-Joy in "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga," there's more to it than skilful casting.

Director George Miller used AI to ensure a smooth transition between the actors portraying Furiosa at different ages.

In an interview on “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” Taylor-Joy revealed that AI was used to blend her face with Browne's, creating a seamless transformation.

At the film’s start, about 35% of Taylor-Joy's features are merged with Browne's, increasing to around 80% by the time Taylor-Joy fully assumes the role.

Here’s what you should know:

  • AI was used to merge Alyla Browne's and Anya Taylor-Joy's faces for a seamless transition in "Furiosa."

  • VFX by DNEG, Framestore, and Metaphysic AI.

  • Ethical concerns about AI in filmmaking stress the need for consent and transparency.

Face blending like a pro

The visual effects (VFX) were handled by DNEG, Framestore, and Metaphysic AI, a startup known for its AI tools in ageing and de-ageing actors.

Metaphysic’s involvement isn't surprising, as they’ve worked on several upcoming films, including Robert Zemeckis' “Here,” starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright.

Anya Taylor-Joy also highlighted the legal and ethical concerns surrounding AI in filmmaking, referencing the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

She emphasised the importance of consent and transparency in using such technology.

Suddenly face swap is the hottest thing again - it’s like 2012 all over again.

North Korea has announced plans to Japan for a satellite launch between May 27 and June 4, detailing maritime danger zones for potential rocket debris near the Korean Peninsula and Luzon in the Philippines.

Don’t Miss - Samsung's practices regarding independent repair shops have raised concerns about consumer privacy and rights. A leaked contract reveals that repair shops must provide Samsung with detailed customer data for each repair, including names, addresses, and specifics about the phone and its issues. Additionally, shops are instructed to remove any non-Samsung parts from devices, a directive that contradicts the legal usage of third-party parts. This policy is under scrutiny as it may conflict with upcoming right-to-repair laws in states like California and Minnesota, which aim to enforce more consumer-friendly standards.
