Apple’s AI dream team just walked out

Apple’s AI search lead, Ke Yang, is leaving the company for Meta, the latest in a series of high-profile exits from Apple’s artificial intelligence division.

Yang was heading the “Answers, Knowledge and Information” (AKI) team, which is working on making Siri more ChatGPT-like by allowing it to pull live information from the web.

The AKI team plays a key role in Apple’s upcoming Siri update, set for March, which aims to make the assistant smarter and more contextual by using both online and personal data.

TL;DR

  • Ke Yang’s exit adds to Apple’s ongoing AI leadership losses.

  • Meta is attracting top AI talent, including from Apple’s core teams.

  • Apple’s revamped Siri remains on schedule for its March launch.

The Siri saga continues

But Yang’s exit follows a growing number of Apple AI leaders who’ve also joined Meta in recent months.

Meta is reportedly building a new “Superintelligence Labs” division, hiring several top researchers from Apple’s “Foundation Models” team.

The wave of departures shows how competitive the race has become between big tech companies to lead AI-powered search and generative tools.

At this point, Meta’s HR must have Apple on speed dial. - MG
