Apple just handed Siri’s brain to Google

Apple will use Google’s Gemini models to power an upgraded version of Siri later this year, under a multi-year deal that deepens the companies’ long-standing partnership and reshapes Apple’s AI approach.

The agreement is a win for Alphabet, whose AI already supports Samsung’s Galaxy AI features.

Bringing Gemini into Siri gives Google access to Apple’s ecosystem of more than two billion active devices.

Google said Apple chose its technology after internal testing, calling Gemini the strongest foundation for Apple Foundation Models and future Apple Intelligence features.

Financial details were not shared, though OpenAI was also in the running.

Apple had added ChatGPT to its devices in late 2024, allowing Siri to hand off more complex questions.

That setup remains unchanged, keeping ChatGPT as an optional layer rather than Siri’s default system.

The move drew criticism from Elon Musk, who raised concerns about Google’s growing influence across AI, Android, and Chrome. Musk’s own firm, xAI, is building competing models backed by large infrastructure spending.

Analysts say the shift places OpenAI in a more supporting role, while Google continues to push ahead with advanced models and generative tools.

Apple, meanwhile, is still working through delays and internal changes after entering the AI race later than rivals.

The deal also builds on Apple and Google’s search partnership, which brings Apple tens of billions of dollars each year.

Following the announcement, Alphabet’s market value briefly passed $4 trillion, reflecting investor confidence in its AI strategy.

Google said Apple Intelligence will continue to run on-device and through Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, with privacy protections unchanged.
