NASA adopted the use of countdowns for launches from Fritz Lang's 1929 sci-fi film "Frau im Mond" to build suspense.

What’s in store:

  • Apple Intelligence will arrive later than expected.

  • Musk shares AI hoax video - is that bad, or was it obvious?

  • Around the web: Major protests are underway in Venezuela following the recent presidential election.

APPLE

Apple’s new AI features, dubbed Apple Intelligence, won’t launch with the initial release of the next iPhone in September.

Instead, expect these features to roll out by October.

This delay gives Apple more time to address bugs and ensure a smooth experience - but means the big selling point of the next iPhones won’t actually be there to begin with.

Developers will get an early look at Apple Intelligence through iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 betas, which will be available for testing soon.

Here’s what you should know:

  • AI features are to be released by October, not with the initial launches of iOS 18 and iPadOS 18.

  • Beta access via iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1.

  • Full AI rollout continues through late 2024 and 2025, including major Siri enhancements.

Slight delay, big impact

Apple Intelligence includes updates like prioritising key notifications summarising web pages and voice notes, improving writing tools, revamping Siri, and integrating OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Some features, especially significant Siri updates, will still be missing initially and will come later in future updates.

Despite the delay, Apple is focused on ensuring the new AI features upgrade user experience and drive sales for the new iPhone 16 models, which will mostly rely on software updates and a few hardware tweaks for their appeal.

Bad Siri lives another day.

Weird AI

Runaway robots!

In a bizarre twist out of a sci-fi movie, a humanoid robot from Promobot Laboratories in Perm, Russia, took itself on an unscheduled stroll, causing quite the commotion. It seems the robot left after an engineer mistakenly left a gate ajar, leading it to wander onto a busy street.

The adventure was short-lived, though, as the robot's battery died after just 50 metres, leaving it stranded in traffic until it was wheeled away by a presumably red-faced engineer.

The incident, caught on video and aired by Russian Channel 5, has stirred speculation. Some critics argue it was all a promotional stunt by Promobot, known for robots that interact with humans and broadcast ads.

Whether an escapee or a PR genius, this robot certainly made headlines and left people questioning the line between technology and publicity stunts.

DEEPFAKES

A manipulated video featuring an AI-generated voice of Vice President Kamala Harris is raising concerns as the US election approaches.

The video, shared by Elon Musk on his social media platform X, mimics Harris’s voice saying things she never said, without indication it was a parody.

Using visuals from a real Harris campaign ad, the video swaps the voice-over with an AI impersonation, falsely attributing statements to her.

It says Harris is a “diversity hire” and accuses her of incompetence.

Harris’s campaign condemned the video, emphasising the importance of truth.

Here’s what happened in brief:

  • AI-generated content is being used to mislead in politics.

  • There's a need for stronger regulations on AI use in campaigns.

  • Social media platforms have varied policies on synthetic media.

A political weapon, or harmless?

This incident underscores the dangers of AI-generated content in politics and the lack of federal regulations on AI use.

While some states and social media platforms have policies, the federal response is yet to materialise.

The video raises questions about handling AI content that blurs the lines between satire and misinformation.

Although the original user disclosed the video as a parody, Musk's post, viewed over 123M times, did not clarify this.

Experts have confirmed the video’s audio was AI-generated, demonstrating the power of generative AI and deepfakes.

Opinions differ on whether viewers would realise the video is a joke, with some believing it could deceive many.

In other instances, AI deepfakes, have been used to influence voters with misinformation and humour.

Can we turn the AI drama off for the rest of the campaign, please?
