ANTHROPIC
A group of authors have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, accusing the company of using pirated books to train its AI models.
The lawsuit, filed in a California court, claims that Anthropic has unlawfully built its business by exploiting copyrighted books.
It alleges that the company drew on an open-source dataset known as "The Pile," which includes a collection of pirated ebooks called Books3.
The key bits:
The authors claim Anthropic knowingly used copyrighted content from pirated sources to train its AI.
The lawsuit demands compensation and an injunction to prevent Anthropic from using copyrighted material in the future.
Similar lawsuits have been filed against tech companies like Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI.
The battle of originality
The authors involved, including Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber, and Kirk Wallace Johnson, argue that Anthropic’s use of these materials is illegal.
This case is part of a broader concern over the use of copyrighted content in AI training.
Anthropic had previously claimed that Claude was trained on in-house material and therefore not in breach of any copyright laws. Yikes.

AI POLITICS
Former President Donald Trump recently shared images online implying that pop star Taylor Swift and her fans endorse him.
The images, posted alongside the message “I accept!”, appear to have been generated by AI and are not authentic.
Swift, who supported the Democrats in 2020 and has been critical of Trump, has not endorsed any candidate for the 2024 election.
The images sparked criticism from Swift’s fanbase, the Swifties, who accused Trump of spreading misinformation.
Here’s what happened:
Trump's shared images of Swift and her fans endorsing him are fake, likely AI-generated.
Swift hasn't endorsed anyone for the 2024 election and has previously criticized Trump.
The images led to backlash from Swift's fans, who accused Trump of spreading misinformation.
Swiftly debunked
One of the shared images showed Swift fans in “Swifties for Trump” t-shirts, while another depicted Swift in a style reminiscent of a World War One US army recruiting post.
Legal experts have said that Swift could technically sue Trump for “false endorsement”, although there would be little to gain.
Wouldn’t you love to see them against each other in court though?
