AI SCIENCE
Geoffrey Hinton and John Hopfield have won the Nobel Prize in Physics for their work in machine learning, a vital part of the AI developments that have taken place recently.
Hinton, 76, from the University of Toronto, and Hopfield, 91, from Princeton University, developed ideas that power much of today's technology, from how we search the internet to editing photos on our phones.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences praised their contributions, noting how their work helps improve climate models, solar energy technology, and medical image analysis.
Hinton, often called the "Godfather of AI," was “flabbergasted” by the award. His research on neural networks laid the foundation for AI systems like ChatGPT - which he says he uses every day.
Neural networks let AI learn from experience, similar to how the human brain works, a concept called deep learning.
Here’s what you should know:
Hinton and Hopfield’s ideas in machine learning were key to AI, driving everyday technologies.
Neural networks enable AI to think like a human brain, leading to advances in facial recognition and language translation.
Concerns remain about AI’s impact on jobs, wealth gaps, and the risk of machines outsmarting humans.
Kings of AI
Despite his success, Hinton has voiced concerns about AI’s future.
He warned that machines could one day become smarter than humans, raising control issues.
While AI boosts productivity and creates wealth, he worries that these benefits often go to the wealthy, leading to job losses and inequality.
When he left Google last year, Hinton spoke out about the risks of AI chatbots, calling them "quite scary."
He also believes a universal basic income might be needed to deal with job losses caused by AI.
If AI’s growth isn’t carefully managed, he said, we could face safety and ethical issues.
Hopfield’s work on machine learning focused on systems that use incomplete information to recreate patterns, like how our brain fills in missing details.
His ideas have led to advances in medical diagnostics and speech recognition.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the winners in Stockholm. Hinton and Hopfield will share a prize fund of $1.1 million.

APPLE
Apple recently faced a downgrade from stock analyst Jefferies, with analyst Edison Lee changing its stock rating from Buy to Hold.
Lee’s main concern is that Apple’s AI-enabled iPhones might not meet high expectations due to current hardware limitations.
In fact, Lee doesn’t think we’ll see a seriously cool AiPhone (sorry) until the iPhone 18 lineup or later.
Apple recently launched its AI suite, called Apple Intelligence, at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June - with features rolling out in the coming months.
This announcement comes after worries that Apple was falling behind competitors like Google and Microsoft in the AI space.
Now, the challenge is to show that these AI projects can bring real value to investors.
Here’s why Apple is struggling:
Current smartphones don’t have the advanced tech needed for fast data transfer, limiting their AI abilities.
It might take another 2-3 years before Apple’s smartphones can fully support advanced AI software.
While Apple’s AI reveal initially pushed its stock higher, demand for the iPhone 16 is lower compared to past launches.
Is Apple running out of steam?
Even with these challenges, analysts think Apple is still well-positioned to lead the AI smartphone market due to its strong hardware-software integration.
Apple’s combination of chips, software, and data gives it an edge over its Android competitors in mobile AI tech.
Around 65% of Wall Street analysts still advise buying Apple shares, with a target of nearly $245 over the next year.
Is Apple about to lose its cool kid status?

Could have done some of that better. but, all in all, not disappointed. AI could help with by helping with keeping up with details and decision making.
