Artificial intelligence has been able to decipher an ancient text that was previously unreadable!
A 21-year-old computer science student has won a global contest to read the first text inside a carbonised scroll from the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, which had been unreadable since a volcanic eruption in AD 79 — the same one that buried nearby Pompeii.
The breakthrough could open up hundreds of texts from the only intact library to survive from Greco-Roman antiquity, in another mind-blowing AI breakthrough!
The student developed a machine-learning algorithm that has detected Greek letters on several lines of the rolled-up papyrus. He used subtle, small-scale differences in surface texture to train his neural network and highlight the ink.
Eventually, the system was able to read words on the previously indecipherable scrolls.

There’s a huge trend going around at the moment - one you’ve probably noticed.
AI portrait apps and services promise to transform a plain photo of yourself into a professional headshot.
Photographers are groaning, as many have realised that although the AI output isn’t perfect, it comes very close, and delivers brilliant results - usually for free.
While it obviously isn’t good to deceive a potential employer about what you look like, others have pointed at that if they are in fact judging you on appearance - why wouldn’t you increase your chances of getting an interview?
Recruiter Tristan Barthel from London-based Tate Recruitment has seen a big rise in the number of people using AI to improve their photos.
He says that it makes no difference in how he deals with a person's application. "I can see if a picture has been AI-generated, and it wouldn't affect my decision, for me it's about the qualifications."
