Amazon wants to run the AI internet too

Amazon is investing $10 billion into new data centres in North Carolina to boost its AI infrastructure.

It’s part of a wider plan to spend up to $100 billion this year on capital projects, with most of that going towards AI.

Like Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI, Amazon is racing to expand its capacity to handle AI workloads.

The North Carolina project will create around 500 jobs and support AWS cloud services in the region.

It follows a similar $11 billion investment in Georgia announced earlier this year.

In brief:

  • Amazon’s putting big money behind AI, up to $100B this year alone.

  • A $10B investment in North Carolina will bring 500 new jobs.

  • Its AI portfolio now includes custom hardware, chatbots, and a major stake in Anthropic.

500 jobs and a flex

Over the past year, Amazon has rolled out a growing list of AI tools, from custom chips like Trainium to language models, a shopping chatbot, and Bedrock, its marketplace for third-party models.

Anthropic also backs it with an $8 billion investment.

Not even surprised anymore. Just wondering where the next centre’s going.
