Studies show that second-born kids are 25-40% more likely to end up in jail. The “middle child” stereotype might actually have some bite. So if the second-born in the family is acting up, just know the stats are not in their favour.

GOOGLE

Google may soon improve its Phone app’s call-screening feature with “AI Replies.”

Code found by 9to5Google suggests the app could soon generate “smart replies” based on how callers respond during screening.

First launched with Android 12, Google’s call-screening tool lets Google Assistant answer calls for users.

Instead of picking up, Google Assistant plays an audio message asking callers to identify themselves.

In late 2022, Google added “contextual replies” that respond based on the type of call, and in March, the feature was updated to handle silent calls too.

Here’s what you should know:

  • AI-powered replies might soon be added to the Phone app, creating responses based on caller input.

  • Google Assistant currently uses audio-based contextual replies to screen calls, even managing silent calls.

  • This update could allow for more flexible, multi-turn conversations, improving call-screening.

Future of calls or fancy ghosting?

The new AI replies could help the app better understand why people are calling, making call-screening more efficient.

This may be the “multi-step, multi-turn conversational AI” that Google hinted at, aiming to enhance call management in different situations.

Granny is gonna be confused though.

Will AI-powered call replies make life easier?

AI STARTUP

AI startup Mistral has launched a content moderation API, designed to support a wide range of applications and safety needs.

This API, based on Mistral's Le Chat chatbot platform, uses the Mistral 8B model, which can classify text into nine categories:

Sexual content, hate speech, violence, criminal activity, self-harm, health, finance, legal matters, and personal information.

It’s built to handle both general and conversational text.

Mistral notes a rising demand for scalable AI moderation, but AI models still face issues with bias.

Keeping it civil

For instance, studies show that AI can mislabel African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and discussions about disabilities as more “toxic” than they actually are.

Mistral stands by its API's accuracy but admits it’s a work in progress, with plans to work with customers and researchers to make further improvements.

In brief:

  • Mistral’s API classifies content into nine safety categories across several languages.

  • Bias remains a challenge for AI moderation, as seen in other AI systems.

  • Mistral’s new batch API lowers processing costs by 25% for high-volume needs, similar to what’s offered by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Additionally, Mistral has introduced a batch API that cuts costs by 25% for high-volume requests, similar to features offered by other AI companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

Mistral’s API is the ‘calm down’ button the web needed.

“Do you think OpenAI will actually use Chat as a new brand name?”

Yup! Total brand rebrand incoming! - 56%

Nah, it’s just a fancy redirect - 44%

Your Views:

“Chat is honestly way too simplistic for it to be associated with ChatGPT. Added to the fact that ChaGPT is pretty much on everyone's lips at this point, and their features of Custom GPTs, people are going to continue dead among "Chat" for the years to come” - readingnook

“Why spend so much for just a redirect” - Ruth
