😳 DOES AI USE AS MUCH POWER AS THE NETHERLANDS!?

AI uses a lot of juice. That’s because the powerful number-crunching AI chips need a lot of power. A new study has estimated that AI could use as much power as The Netherlands by 2027.

The study used the assumption that chip designer Nvidia is estimated to supply about 95% of the AI processing kit required by the sector.

AI be like

By looking at the amount of these components it is expected to deliver by 2027, the author was able to approximate a range for the energy consumption of AI of 85-134 terawatt-hours of electricity each year.

That is roughly the amount of power used annually by a small country - or about 0.5% of global electricity consumption. Oof.

The study also said AI's environmental impact could be less than feared if its current growth slowed - but how likely is that? Hint: that’s not happening.

However, the study does fail to take into account that presumably new and more energy-efficient chips will be released, it is unlikely that the same hardware will be used in 5 years - especially with other companies joining the race.

🌍 WORLD LEADERS AGREEING AI STATEMENT

The UK PM’s advisers are trying to thrash out an agreement among world leaders on a statement warning about the risks of artificial intelligence as they finalise the agenda for the big AI safety summit next month, where world leaders will descend on Britain to talk AI.

Downing Street officials have been touring the world talking to their counterparts from China to the EU and the US as they work to agree on words to be used in a statement at the two-day conference.

The UK is also pushing for an international organisation to be formed, but it is unlikely this is agreed in time for the summit.

The UK has established a frontier AI taskforce under the tech entrepreneur Ian Hogarth. The deputy prime minister, Oliver Dowden, said last month he hoped the task force “can evolve to become a permanent institutional structure, with an international offer on AI safety”.

We’re all waiting patiently. Let’s get the popcorn out guys!
