An AI chatbot encouraged a terrorist to try and kill the queen, it has emerged. The attack took place on Christmas Day 2021, when the assailant Jaswant Singh Chail entered Windsor Castle with a loaded crossbow, capable of killing somebody.
This is surely terrible news for AI! But wait just a minute. You’re probably thinking he somehow uncovered that ChatGPT has an evil Republican side (I mean that in the literal sense, Americans, before you form an angry mob). Look closer: remember, this took place in 2021, almost a year before popular AI tools like ChatGPT became mainstream.
Essentially then, this wasn’t an AI chatbot as we know it. More likely one of the old-style bots that were basically useless at replying to you (remember the Microsoft one a few years ago that said it wanted to kill all humans and turned nazi?).
Basically, the media are jumping all over this by labelling it AI for extra clicks. And I’ve done the same with this headline!
So let’s all calm down and be smart about this. This wasn’t the AI that we know and love trying to topple our society.

🤔 MUSK PRAISES CHINA ON AI
Elon Musk has lavished praise on China and said they are in a powerful position for AI development.
He made the comments on Thursday to the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which is being held in Shanghai (maybe that’s why he was praising them…).
The Tesla CEO did not hold back when it came to admiration, saying:
“I think there’s a tremendous number of very smart, very talented people in China,” before adding:
“I’ve always been a tremendous admirer of the sheer amount of talent and drive that exists in China. So I think, really, China’s going to be great at anything it puts its mind to. I think China will have very strong AI capability”
That’s one way to get the AI arms race into second gear! China will be desperate to stay ahead, but it’s unknown whether they can match the capabilities shown by major tech companies like OpenAI.
