The Deputy British PM has said that AI can be more significant than the industrial revolution. It’s a bold claim.

Oliver Dowden (I had no idea he was deputy PM either) said: “This is a total revolution that is coming. It’s going to totally transform almost all elements of life over the coming years, and indeed, even months, in some cases.

“It is much faster than other revolutions that we’ve seen and much more extensive, whether that’s the invention of the internal combustion engine or the industrial revolution.”

That’s a big claim. AI is huge, but will the impact match the industrial revolution? That remains to be seen.

Before the industrial revolution, economic growth was essentially flat everywhere, forever. Industry lead to rapid growth and people accumulating capital. I think it’s a big ask to compare AI to the event that literally created the modern economic system, but we’ll see.

News Corp, the media giant that owns newspapers like The Sun, The Times and the Wall Street Journal, has announced its profits have plunged 75% - but is hailing AI as the answer to its woes.

The media giant said its net income nose-dived to $187m (£147m) to the year ended 30 June, from $760m (£598m) the previous year.

Now here’s where AI comes in! We aren’t just Bloomberg y’know.

Chief executive Robert Thomson said he was feeling positive about the months ahead and said generative AI is the future.

He said: "That momentum is surely gathering pace in the age of generative AI, which we believe presents a remarkable opportunity to create a new stream of revenues, while allowing us to reduce costs across the business."

So, is news about to get a whole lot worse or a whole lot better? Just wait until an AI news article prints a major error and the backlash that comes with it…
