🐅 HOW AI IS SAVING ENDANGERED SPECIES

Artificial Intelligence has already been praised by conservationists around the world for its capabilities to support wildlife, and the word is spreading.

Scientists in the conservation space are now increasingly leaning on AI to boost their work, because AI has the potential to quickly and effectively analyse vast quantities of real-world data.

Let’s take a look at the two key uses of AI in this industry and how it is transforming the tracking of species and wildlife.

Soundscape analysis

AI tools can help to quantify biodiversity in tropical forests by identifying animal species from audio recordings.

Researchers have used AI to analyse animal ‘soundscapes’ in Ecuador. They placed recorders in 43 plots of land in different stages of deforestation.

They then gave the audio files to experts and AI, finding that AI was able to identify 75/77 birds it was trained on, showing the effectiveness of the model, with plans to scale up the model for more species.

Camera-trap footage

Researchers at Conservation AI have developed models that can scour through footage and images from drones or camera traps to identify wildlife — including critically endangered species — and track animal movements.

Anybody can upload video and imagery to the free-to-use site and have it analysed.

So far, Conservation AI has processed more than 12.5 million images and detected more than 4 million individual animal appearances across 68 species, including endangered pangolins in Uganda, gorillas in Gabon and orangutans in Malaysia.

All of this shows the effectiveness of applying AI models to tasks that previously required thousands of hours of human work.

🎵 ABBA HIT OUT AT AI IN MUSIC

ABBA’s Bjorn Ulvaeus has warned of the “existential challenge” of AI on the music industry.

Ulvaeus is the president of a non-profit organisation that represents songwriters and composers around the world.

A new report from the organisation showed that royalty collections for songwriters and composers had recovered from pre-pandemic levels but Ulvaeus warned that AI could present greater challenges to musicians going forward.

He said:

“What we now face is another very serious, existential challenge – that of artificial intelligence. AI will radically change the world for creators and the creative industry. It demands international leadership and a strong united front from all parts of the creative industry.”

It looks like Bjorn isn’t the biggest fan of AI then…

I guess you could say he’s not going to be laying all of his love on AI, while AI is just asking for him to take a chance on me…
