👍 AI IS SAFE FOR NOW, SAYS US DEFENCE CHIEF

Are you worried about the existential threat AI might pose to humanity?

Relax. Dr Craig Martell, the US Defence Department's new chief digital and AI officer, says there’s nothing to worry about right now.

The world is "nowhere close" to artificial intelligence (AI) becoming an existential threat, says Martell, who predicts future supremacy in the field will all come down to data.

Worried about AI?

“It's not a singular technology where if we have AI, we're going to be successful and if the other guys have AI, we're going to be in danger," he said.

Because AI uses data from the past to predict the future, Martell warns that it may actually not be much use in war, where new and unpredictable things emerge.

According to Dr. Martell, large language models, while exciting, are currently too unreliable for use in anything but the lowest-risk activities.

In other words, it’s going to be a long time before AI drones are flying around blowing each other up.

📖 PROMPT TIP TO TRY TODAY

Every Friday we give you a simple, actionable prompt tip to try over the weekend to get better at using AI.

The breakdown

Ask ChatGPT to breakdown exactly why it gave you a certain answer. This will give you a deeper understanding of how it came to its conclusions and why it chose to answer that way. From here, you can ask more questions.

🇬🇧 UK BUILDING NEW AI SUPERCOMPUTER

The UK has greenlit a new supercomputer project for Bristol, with one of the most powerful computers in Europe set to be based there.

The University of Bristol will host the new AI Research Resource (AIRR), which will serve as a national facility to help researchers maximise the potential of AI and support critical work into the potential and safe use of the technology.

It is hoped that this will help the UK meet their AI ambitions with the new centre set to unlock greater capabilities.

This all takes place before the big summit coming up - The UK will host the world’s first AI Safety Summit on 1 and 2 November, bringing together leading countries, technology organisations, and academic and civil society to discuss the risks created or exacerbated by the most powerful AI systems.

It’s going to be a corker!
