Artificial intelligence poses the same level of threat as nuclear war, says British PM Rishi Sunak.
It’s an incredibly bold and shocking statement, attempting to highlight how seriously the UK government is taking AI.
Sunak said mitigating the risk of human extinction because of AI should be a global priority alongside pandemics and nuclear war.
AI will pose major security risks to the UK within two years and has the potential to “enhance” terrorist capabilities, according to a new analysis by the government.
The technology could aid terror groups’ capabilities – including propaganda, bioweapons and attack planning.
With the big summit coming up, it’s no surprise he is talking up AI to grab headlines and get some of the spotlight.
He is already starting to puff up the AI summit starting next Wednesday:
AI does not respect borders, so it cannot be developed alone.
That’s why we’re hosting the world's first ever AI Safety Summit next week.
We'll work closely with international partners to address the risks head on so we can make the most of the opportunities AI can bring.

Are his comments too far? While it’s no doubt AI is capable of assisting in doing these things, it’s also far more likely that AI can help in preventing these things, especially when backed by military budgets.

USA Today have been accused of generating AI articles for their review site, Reviewed.
Employees working at Reviewed, found that some stories were credited to writers they never heard of and had suspicious formatting and templating.
According to The Washington Post, staffers suspected that the articles created by “Breanna Miller” and “Avery Williamson,” who they couldn’t find on LinkedIn, may have come from artificial intelligence.
Jaime Carrillo, a senior writer, told the outlet that the “gobbledygook” reviews began to appear just weeks after employees conducted a one-day strike to call for a new contract.
After being called out on the matter, USA Today maintained its innocence and denied they were AI…before they deleted the articles!
