AI regulation? More like AI collaboration
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has taken up paid adviser roles at Microsoft and AI start-up Anthropic.
The government watchdog Acoba approved both roles but told Sunak he can’t lobby ministers or advise on government contracts for two years.
Sunak, who’s still an MP, said he’s “delighted” to work with the two tech firms and will donate all his earnings to The Richmond Project, a charity he started to improve maths education.
At Microsoft, he’ll offer strategic advice on global and political issues, while at Anthropic, he’ll help as part of an “internal think tank” focused on AI.
Here’s what happened:
Sunak joins Microsoft and Anthropic as adviser; will donate all pay to charity.
Watchdog bans him from lobbying or government contract work for two years.
Roles focus on AI, tech strategy, and innovation.
From debates to data sets
Acoba noted that both companies have major interests in UK policy, which could raise concerns about unfair influence, but said those risks are lower now that Sunak has been out of office for some time.
He’s also set to advise Goldman Sachs, where he worked early in his career.
Despite rumours about a move to Silicon Valley, Sunak said he plans to stay focused on his Yorkshire constituency.
Sunak said he hopes his new roles will help make sure technology benefits everyone.
