AI STARTUPS
Radical Ventures, a Toronto-based venture capital firm, has raised nearly $800 million to create the largest AI-focused fund.
This is their third fund, aimed at supporting growth-stage start-ups, following $550 million in 2022 and $350 million in 2019.
Key investors include former Google chief Eric Schmidt, AI expert Fei-Fei Li, and Geoffrey Hinton, along with Canadian pension funds like CPP Investments, which recently committed $75 million, raising its total investment in Radical to $204 million.

No guts, no glory
Despite some concerns about AI start-up returns, Radical Ventures co-founder Jordan Jacobs remains confident in the firm’s ability to invest in future industry giants.
Founded in 2017, Radical has been a leader in AI investments, backing companies like Cohere, now valued at $5.5 billion.
Venture capitalists have heavily invested in AI over the past two years, even as broader start-up funding has faced challenges.
Radical’s founders, who studied under AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton, recognised AI's transformative potential early on and have remained committed to the field ever since.

AI AND NATURE
Every morning, California’s top firefighters now use AI to predict wildfire behaviour, identify high-risk areas and improve their response plans.
Chief Phillip SeLegue explains that when AI signals a high fire risk, they strengthen their response with extra resources.
This change is already making a big difference, as AI cuts the time it takes to predict fire paths from hours to seconds.
Here’s what’s happening:
AI reduces fire path prediction times from hours to seconds, boosting response speed.
It predicts wildfires up to 10 days in advance by analysing large datasets.
Global projects are using AI to predict and manage wildfires on a wider scale.
Fighting fire with code
AI’s ability to predict wildfires days in advance is a game changer.
By examining large amounts of data on vegetation, weather, and ignition risks, AI helps foresee when and where wildfires might start.
This predictive power is already in use not just in California but in other US states and countries like Chile and Spain.
These AI systems use advanced tools like Lidar to map vegetation and predict how fires might spread.
Around the world, other AI projects are underway, aiming to predict fires by analysing factors like lightning strikes and CO2 levels.
As AI continues to develop, its role in wildfire management will grow, providing more accurate predictions and improving firefighting efforts globally.
