AI meets democracy in ChatGPT Gov

OPENAI

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Gov, a version of its chatbot designed specifically for government agencies.

It gives US agencies secure access to OpenAI’s advanced models, including GPT-4, while meeting strict security and privacy standards.

The tool can be used within a Microsoft Azure cloud instance, allowing agencies to manage sensitive, non-public data safely.

ChatGPT Gov includes features like shared workspaces, tools for creating custom GPTs, and an admin console for IT teams.

OpenAI is also working with the UK government on a chatbot for the UK.gov website.

OpenAI says the goal is to help policymakers use AI responsibly to improve public services while aligning with democratic values.

Since 2024, over 90,000 users across 3,500 US government agencies have sent 18 million messages using ChatGPT.

Key users include the Air Force Research Laboratory and Minnesota’s Enterprise Translations Office.

In brief:

  • What’s new? ChatGPT Gov offers US government agencies secure access to GPT-4.

  • Who’s using it? Over 3,500 agencies, including the Air Force, already use ChatGPT tools.

  • Big news in AI: Trump and industry leaders launched Stargate, a $500 billion AI project.

AI for the People, by the Government

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has cancelled Joe Biden’s executive order on AI safeguards.

Trump also announced Stargate, a $500 billion AI data centre project, alongside OpenAI’s Sam Altman, SoftBank, and Oracle.
