😳 AI MASTERS THE ART OF SMELLING

AI is apparently great at everything, as thanks to some crafty scientists, it has now mastered the art of… smelling.

An AI model has achieved human-level skill in describing how certain chemicals will smell, closing a critical gap in the scientific understanding of olfaction (that’s a fancy word for smelling).

The experiment went like this - scientists trained an AI to recognise 5,000 smells, based on the chemical structure of the object. The final model was able to beat humans at guessing smells half of the time.

The next stage in AI sentience?

It also surprised the experimenters by being able to predict the strength of the smell, and has proven accurate in predicting the smell of an object based on its chemical structure, which is a bigger deal than it sounds -

This technology could lead to breakthroughs in the fragrance and flavour industries, and even help create new functional scents like mosquito repellents.

So, AI noses for everyone soon, yeah?

🤔 AI IMAGE OR REAL? - THE RESULTS!

Yesterday we asked you to vote on whether this image was real or AI-generated.

So - what was it?

64% of you said AI

36% said real photo

The image was…

REAL!

Yep, it’s a real photo. Got most of you with that one, now I can feel smug alllll day.

📝 CALL OF DUTY ADDS AI ABUSE MONITORING

Ah, Call of Duty. 12-year-old-me’s favourite thing in the universe. And who could forget the brutal voice chats to fellow players?

Well, that might be changing soon. Activision is adding an AI that will monitor all voice communications in-game, to monitor hate speech. That sounds like a great idea, as long it works of course.

Publisher Activision said the moderation tool, which uses machine learning technology, would be able to identify discriminatory language and harassment in real-time.

Players will not be able to opt out of having the AI listen in unless they completely disable in-game voice chat.

I’m all for kicking out actual abuse of course, but I can’t help but be concerned by a company fully analysing every piece of speech - is this a step too far?
