AI COPYRIGHT
Artists have cleared a major hurdle in their lawsuit against AI image generators.
The first-of-a-kind lawsuit is expected to have major implications on the future of AI image generators, and it looks like human artists are winning - for now.
Here’s what you need to know:
U.S. District Judge William Orrick on Monday advanced all copyright infringement and trademark claims.
The case will move forward to “discovery”, where information related to how the AI firms harvested copyrighted material will be uncovered.
The result of the case will majorly impact AI in Hollywood and art in general.
Trouble brewing for team AI
U.S. District Judge William Orrick highlighted Stable Diffusion in particular, which can produce hyperrealistic images with just a few words.
Key to the lawsuit is the LAION dataset, which was built using five billion images that were scraped from the internet and utilised by Stability to create Stable Diffusion.
It also implicated Midjourney, which trained its AI system using the same model, as well as DeviantArt for using the model in DreamUp, an image generation tool.
The judge believes this model may have been built on copyrighted materials “to a significant extent”, paving the way for his decision to allow the lawsuit to move forward to the discovery phase.
Not all bad news
However, other aspects of the lawsuit were dismissed. Claims against the companies for breach of contract, unjust enrichment and violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act will not move forward.
The outcome of the case will likely have major implications for AI copyright laws going forward.
Time to lawyer up, Stability.

AI SCIENCE
You’ve probably heard of the Epic of Gilgamesh. It's regarded as one of the most important archaeological discoveries ever made. The stone tablets depict an ancient flood tale, similar to what is seen in Genesis.
However, many of the fragments of the tablet are still missing.
Now, AI has joined the treasure hunt - with incredible results.
Here’s what you should know:
AI has been enlisted to find missing pieces of the tablet.
Results so far have been massively impressive.
30% remains missing… for now.
The AI advantage
The problem with finding and identifying pieces is that there are millions of stone tablet fragments housed in museums all over the world.
To add to this, so few experts exist that can translate them, and many remain untranslated. In other words - the Gilgamesh pieces are out there, somewhere!
A new AI project called Fragmentarium is being used to scan and decipher these tablet pieces at a record pace.
Machine learning treats the fragments like puzzle pieces and finds where they slot together.
Between the tablet’s discovery in 1872 and 2018, 5,000 pieces were discovered.
Since deploying the AI, more than 1,500 new pieces and hundreds of new lines to the poem have been found in the 6 years since - a remarkable acceleration.
Researchers hope that AI can be used effectively all over the archaeological world.
Who knew AI would help us solve ancient mysteries?

Don’t Miss - Apple is allowing third-party developers to offer in-app NFC transactions starting with iOS 18.1, enabling apps to use features like in-store payments and digital keys. Users can also set a default contactless payment app accessible by double-clicking the side button. This change follows an EU antitrust ruling that required Apple to open iPhone NFC payments to third parties.
