AI TOOLS

AI just made the UK Supreme Court easier to understand

The University of Surrey has built an AI tool to transcribe Supreme Court hearings, designed to make court cases clearer and easier to access.

Trained on 139 hours of hearings and legal documents, the system cut transcription errors by up to 9% compared with leading paid tools.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Errors reduced by up to 9%

  • Trained on just 139 hours of hearings

  • Judgements linked directly to video timestamps

AI joins the jury (kind of)

Unlike generic systems, it’s tuned to the specific language used in British courts.

The project also matches parts of written judgments with the exact moment they were spoken in video recordings, making it quicker to find key arguments.

The tool has already caught the attention of the UK Supreme Court and the National Archives.

Imagine binge-watching court cases with subtitles that actually make sense.
