💻 AI FRONT AND CENTRE AT DEF CON
Def Con is an annual hacker conference held in Las Vegas. You might have heard of it. This year, however, there will be a serious pivot towards hacking AI when the event starts this Thursday.
Dr Rumman Chowdhury, chief executive of Humane Intelligence and a Responsible AI Fellow at Harvard was one of the organisers of the event.
They have designed a competition to "identify problems in AI systems" and "create independent evaluation". She says the event will be a safe space for companies "to talk about their problems and how we solve them".
3,000 people working alone on one of 158 laptops will each be given 50 minutes to try to find flaws in eight large language AI models. Knowing Def Con… this should be fun. Expect chaos to reign and AI flaws to be exposed left, right and centre.
AI chaos is coming!
Oh, and the winner wins a top-of-the-range GPU worth thousands, just in case the hackers needed any more motivation.

Getting a house valuation just became way easier… and less personal.
Supposedly, AI algorithms can use Google Street View and estimate house values with astonishing accuracy.
A lab at MIT used pictures of 20,000 houses around Boston, as well as data that measured how their prices changed over time. When other variables were added — such as structural information and neighbourhood amenities — the AI was able to make very accurate predictions of how prices would change over time.
When this model was applied to a much wider set of images, it turned out that just by using visual cues it was remarkably accurate at predicting information about neighbourhoods and therefore house prices.
However, there are some concerns the model will exhibit the same biases seen in the real estate industry in America, such as black Americans’ homes being valued at lower than they should be.
It could also lead to people designing houses not around people, but to please an algorithm and get an increased valuation. Oh sh*t.
Estate agents, join the AI unemployment queue… maybe?
