Hello Kitty, apparently, is not a cat. She is, in fact, a human in a costume.

What’s in store:

  • The Paris Olympics will be a tech-infused experience with Google collaboration.

  • Figma responds to claims it stole Apple’s designs.

  • Around the web: FTC criticises Xbox Game Pass price hikes and new Standard tier for excluding first-party game access.

GOOGLE

Google has secured a major sponsorship deal with NBC and Team USA, integrating its products, including the Gemini AI, into the coverage of the Paris Olympics.

During NBC’s primetime coverage, commentators will use Google’s AI to provide insights, such as explaining lane assignments in swimming or exploring new sports.

Viewers can expect to see Google’s technology seamlessly incorporated across NBC, Peacock, and other NBCUniversal platforms.

Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, describes the deal as “more than just a sponsorship; it’s a powerful alliance that brings together the best of technology and sports.”

The rundown on Olympic AI:

  • AI Overviews will enhance explanations and insights during broadcasts.

  • Google Lens and Maps will provide immersive views of venues and help athletes and fans explore Paris.

  • Social media segments will highlight Team USA athletes using AI tools in branded content.

An Olympic leap

This collaboration ensures that Google’s AI and other tools will enrich the viewing experience, providing dynamic and engaging content that enhances the stories of the athletes and the overall fan experience.

All I care about is the Google Search bar themes during the Olympics honestly.

FIGMA

Figma recently withdrew its “Make Designs” AI tool after a user discovered it generated a weather app design suspiciously similar to Apple’s.

This raised legal concerns and suggested Figma might have used Apple’s designs for training.

Although CEO Dylan Field denied this, Figma released a full statement on their blog.

VP of Product Design, Noah Levin, admitted the tool used unvetted components resembling real-world applications.

Upon discovering the issue, Figma removed the offending assets and disabled the features.

They’re now working on improving their QA process, though there’s no set timeline for the tool’s return.

Here’s what you should know about this:

  • Figma’s AI tool generated designs too similar to Apple’s.

  • The company is upgrading its QA process.

  • Users have until August 15th to opt in or out of data usage for AI training.

Misstep fixed!

Make Design was launched in a limited beta during Figma’s Config event but was quickly pulled after the Apple-like designs were posted online.

CTO Kris Rasmussen clarified they didn’t train the AI models (including OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Amazon’s Titan Image Generator G1) with app designs.

Instead, they used custom design systems to guide the tool’s output.

Figma’s blog detailed the creation of these design systems, consisting of hundreds of components for mobile and desktop.

These components help the AI assemble user-generated prompts into comprehensive designs, with Amazon Titan creating the final images.

Other AI tools announced at Config, like text generators, remain available.

Users have until August 15th to opt in or out of allowing Figma to use their data for future AI training.
