AI is trying its hand at improv comedy in a new show called Artificial Intelligence Improvisation, by the Improbotics troupe playing as part of an AI festival in London.

Comedy and humour are something AI’s really struggle with. Have you ever asked ChatGPT to come up with original jokes? Often it produces complete nonsense (and not in a good way). So how does this show work?

It uses a chatbot called Alex alongside a five-strong troupe of human improvisers. Alex is not capable of voice recognition, instead, the show’s MC (and founder) Piotr Mirowksi feeds the other performers’ dialogue into a computer, and Alex generates phrases that can be selected in response.

And apparently, it’s sh*t. The outputs are bizarre and not always fitting with the performance - and that’s part of the comedy.

Humour is incredibly hard to boil down to an algorithm, as it’s a combination of language, tone, timings, taboos, and much more. As the saying goes: “Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process.”

It looks like it’s going to be a long time until AI can crack this one.

Quote it.

To put emphasis on the most important parts of a prompt, put quotes around them for better results. For example:

“write an essay on ‘social media marketing’”

AI is being deployed to count puffin population numbers, with a revolutionary new system that can do facial recognition on each individual bird.

The project is supported by the energy company SSE and the tech companies Microsoft and Avenade. Cameras are focused on the birds, tracking their habits and breeding patterns.

The system gives an unprecedented level of data on the puffin colony, which is a microcosm of conditions in the entire North Sea region.

"I think it's hugely important and plays a really big role when it comes to conservation and sustainability. It helps to unravel a lot of the complexity that conservation brings. Having the opportunity to track, see and gather those insights... means that we can make better decisions in terms of how we go to protect biodiversity as a whole," Musidora Jorgensen, chief sustainability officer of Microsoft UK, said.

AI is turning into an essential tool for the protection of nature, yay!
