Did you think AI was going to leave us all unemployed? Think again! A new study has shown that AI is boosting both job quality and quantity.

New research has found more than three-quarters of firms reporting that use of the technology had created new roles within the company and the majority reporting that job quality had improved.

More than 1,000 UK companies were asked about AI, and more than 860 confirmed they were using AI and other automated technology, with 78% of those companies reporting this had resulted directly in the creation of new jobs!

Professor James Hayton, lead author of the report, said: “The evidence we really have about this is that technology tends to create new jobs and upskill jobs. Yes, it does downskill and disrupt other jobs, but in the long run, there tends to be a positive impact on the economy.”

So much for inflammatory headlines. I guess newspapers need to get their clicks somehow…

The report did warn that it was important that AI tech was distributed equally throughout the country, or it would risk huge regional inequalities.

Remember when Sarah Silverman filed a lawsuit against AI companies for copyright infringement because it knew about her books?

Well, Meta has refuted claims that its AI model Llama was trained using copyrighted material from the popular books in question.

The Facebook and Instagram parent company called the use of materials to train its systems “transformative” and “fair use.”

Met’as official response said:

“Use of texts to train LLaMA to statistically model language and generate original expression is transformative by nature and quintessential fair use”

The company said the plaintiff also couldn’t provide specific outputs related to their material.

Will Meta’s claim hold up? There’s a lot riding on this lawsuit…
