👨🏫 IS AI THE PERFECT TEACHING ASSISTANT?
AI could be the perfect teaching assistant, according to educators making us the available tools.
Patrick Pennefather, assistant professor in the department of theatre and film at the University of British Columbia, is one those working generative AI into his courses this year, and says it can be a powerful brainstorming aid.
"It can support different aspects of that entire creative pipeline," he said.
One exercise involves using ChatGPT — one of the more popular generative AIs, capable of creating text and images from scratch — to write new plays in the style of William Shakespeare.
After getting the output, students then edit and improve the piece until it is final.
"That's my optimistic point of view — that AI will not replace or supplant the creative, but help to augment their own process."
He’s not the only teacher using ChatGPT.
Professor Moulay Akhloufi from the University of Moncton, says it can be a useful teaching aid to computer science students.
ChatGPT is "the perfect teaching assistant," he said, because it can answer questions 24 hours a day, and can help students test their code.
I wish my teachers were as on the ball about tech as these guys!

😡 MURDOCH BOSS HATES AI
Rupert Murdoch’s #2, Robert Thomson, who manages News Corp, hates AI, it turns out.
This week he told a conference in San Francisco that the rapid rise of artificial intelligence was “epochal”.
Thomson said that AI will lead to a “tsunami” of job losses. “From 2008 to 2020, 57pc of newsroom jobs in the United States have been lost,” he said.
“People have to understand that AI is essentially retrospective. It’s about permutations of pre-existing content. And the danger is, it’s rubbish in, rubbish out, and in this case, rubbish all about,” Thomson said.

Mr Thomson when someone texts him an AI story.
So, clearly he isn’t a fan of AI!
It’s not the first time News Corp have fought against new tech. After a decade long battle, they managed to get Google to agree to pay to display their news.
Expect some kind of legal battle coming soon then, at the direction of Mr Murdoch!
