Respected author and historian Yuval Noah Harari thinks that AI could lead to a financial disaster, unless we stay on top of the tech and regulate it properly.

Harari has compared the idea of AI financial tools to the dodgy CDOs that triggered the 2008 crisis:

“What happens if AI is not only given greater control over the financial system of the world, but it starts creating new financial devices that only AI can understand, that no human being can understand?” said Harari, adding that the 2007-08 financial crisis was caused by debt instruments such as collateralised debt obligations (CDOs) that few people understood and were thus inadequately regulated.”

“AI has the potential to create financial devices which are orders of magnitude more complex than CDOs. And just imagine the situation where we have a financial system that no human being is able to understand and therefore also not able to regulate,” he said. “And then there is a financial crisis and nobody understands what is happening.”

It’s not the first time the Sapiens author has spoken on AI, having previously highlighted other risks and called for a 6 month pause on developing new AIs.

Yesterday we asked you to vote on an image and guess whether it was a real photo or an AI-generated image. 

This was a good one!

We got exactly 50/50 in the polls, with lots of interesting comments. some said the colours were too unbelievable, while others said the leaves looked too good for AI.

Who was right?

Well, it was… a real photo!

The dust is still settling on the AI summit that took place 2 weeks ago in the UK, but France has announced it is to host the next summit.

It appears that the goal to have these summits as a recurring event like the COP climate meetings has worked, with France keen to host the world leaders next time around.

"The first edition of the Artificial Intelligence Security Summit, organized by the United Kingdom, provides an opportunity to develop international cooperation in the field of security, a crucial issue for the years to come.”

“It was, therefore, natural for France to host the second edition of this summit," French Minister Delegate for the Digital Economy Jean-Noël Barrot said.

There is no date around the summit, although it was originally suggested every 6 months, so it will probably be taking place in April-May time.
