AI TECH

AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, is OpenAI’s big goal, and they’ve raised $6.6 billion to get there.

But even top AI experts, like Fei-Fei Li, admit they don’t fully understand what AGI is.

At a recent AI summit, Li, a key figure in AI, said she isn’t sure what AGI means, despite being deeply involved in AI development.

She feels it’s more important to focus on real, current AI issues.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, defines AGI as AI that could work like a “median human coworker.” That’s pretty vague.

They’ve set five stages of progress, starting with chatbots like ChatGPT and ending with AI that could run entire organisations.

Here’s what you should know:

  • AGI is still unclear, even to experts.

  • OpenAI’s five levels track progress from chatbots to full organisational AI.

  • Li advocates for balanced regulations that focus on innovation and safety.

We’re all still guessing

Li’s work thus far has been critical in shaping AI today.

She created ImageNet in 2006, which helped spark the AI boom we’re living through.

Today, she leads her startup, World Labs, which focuses on developing “spatial intelligence” – AI that can understand the 3D world, moving beyond simple recognition.

Li also advises California on AI regulations, pushing for smart, evidence-based policies that balance innovation and safety.

She believes regulations should focus on improving AI for society without unfairly penalising technologists.

So, AGI - understood?

GOOGLE

Google Lens has added a new feature that lets you search using video and voice.

This update is available right now on Android and iOS through Search Labs.

Let’s say you’re in an aquarium and want to know why the fish are swimming together, you can hold up your phone, open Google Lens, and start recording a video while asking your question. Gen Z is going to love it!

Google’s AI model, Gemini, will analyse the video and give you an answer based on what it sees.

Rajan Patel, VP of Engineering at Google, explained that the video is processed as a series of images, similar to how Lens with photos.

The difference now is that Gemini can look at multiple images in a row to provide an answer based on information from the web.

Currently, the feature doesn’t recognise sounds in videos yet, like identifying a bird by its song, but Patel mentioned this is something Google is working on.

Additionally, you can ask questions using your voice when searching with photos of typing, which are available globally but only in English for now.

Here’s how it works:

  • Search with video and voice: Now live in Google Lens and Android and iOS.

  • Gemini AI model: Analyses videos frame by frame to provide answers.

  • Voice search for photos: Available globally, but only in English for now.

Ask, record, and get your answers

This feature makes Google Lens easier to use by adding more natural ways to search, beyond just pictures.

While sound recognition is still being developed, Google is clearly aiming to make searching even more interactive and simple in the future.
