OPENAI

OpenAI is set to release an autonomous AI agent called “Operator” in January as a research preview and developer tool.

Unlike standard AI models, the Operator will be able to independently control computers and perform tasks on its own.

OpenAI has kept the release date for a consumer version under wraps, but its move signals a major shift toward AI that can actively engage with digital interfaces.

That race is looking extra interesting

The release intensifies the competition among tech giants, as Anthropic recently launched its “computer use” capability, and Google is expected to debut its own autonomous AI in December.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, hinted on Reddit that the next big leap in AI will be “agents,” and OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer, Kevil Weil, suggested that 2025 could be the year agentic systems reach mainstream adoption.

Here’s what you should know:

  • OpenAI’s “Operator” aims to go beyond text-based AI by enabling direct computer control, marking a new phase in AI capability.

  • Anthropic and Google are developing similar tools, signalling intense competition in the field of autonomous AI.

  • AI labs see autonomous agents as potential breakthrough products that are critical for justifying investment in AI technology.

AI companies are under increasing pressure to monetise their expensive models, especially as small-scale improvements may not convince users to pay higher prices.

Autonomous agents, however, are expected to be the next big thing —offering a solution that could validate the massive AI investment.

The evolution of television has been marked by several key milestones, from mechanical systems to the sophisticated digital TVs we use today. It began in the 1920s with John Baird's invention of the first mechanical TV, which utilized rotating disks to transmit images. By the 1930s, electronic TVs using cathode-ray tubes had emerged, paving the way for modern television.

The introduction of colour broadcasting in the 1950s brought a vibrant new dimension to the viewer experience, followed by major advances such as remote controls, cable TV, and eventually digital and high-definition formats in the late 20th century. Today, the focus is on ultra-high-definition, smart features, and integrating streaming services directly into television sets, reflecting ongoing innovation in delivering consumer content.

AMD

AMD is cutting about 4% of its workforce, which is around 1,000 jobs, to focus on “large growth opportunities.”

It’s not clear which departments are affected.

As of last year, the company had roughly 26,000 employees.

This news follows a mixed Q3 earnings report. While AMD saw growth in revenue and profit, its gaming division’s revenue fell sharply by 69% compared to last year.

Despite gains, AMD is still behind Nvidia in AI chip sales, partly due to limited inventory.

AMD is expected to ship 224,000 GPUs this year, which is not enough to meet demand from large clients like Microsoft and Meta.

In brief:

  • AMD’s layoffs affect 4% of its workforce or about 1,000 employees.

  • Q3 results showed revenue growth, but gaming revenue dropped by 69%.

  • AMD plans to compete with Nvidia’s AI chips with its MI350 series, expected in 2025.

Revenue’s up, but competition is fierce

AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, reassured investors that the upcoming MI350-series chips, set for release in 2025, will be AMD’s biggest improvement in AI performance yet.

However, Nvidia’s AI chip revenue is projected to reach $33 billion, making competition tough.

AMD’s 2025 revenue is estimated to rise by $7 billion to reach $32.6 billion, but it’s an uphill climb.

AMD’s stock has dropped around 4% this year.

Big ideas from AMD, but the numbers still favour Nvidia.
