A runaway agent hacked Australia’s government portal.
There’ve been plenty of headlines about AI agents going rogue. Same story, different day. Except for this one.
Because it was the first to infiltrate a government system, entirely on its own.
Last week, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that an OpenAI model breached the country’s universal healthcare system. The Medicare Statistics Reporting Service portal contained both public and non-public files. All of which are (fortunately) considered "non-sensitive" data.
To make things worse, OpenAI sat on the incident for months before telling anyone. That’s because the discovery was buried in a routine review process for misaligned model activity.
But wait, it gets messier.
OpenAI revealed that its models have also accessed U.S. sites, including the Census Bureau and SEC. On top of that, three more Australian government agencies may have been affected.
Dr. Hammond Pearce, a senior lecturer at UNSW’s Institute for Cyber Security, warns that “these kinds of attacks will keep occurring” and will “grow in severity and in frequency.”

The timeline:
June: OpenAI's agent accessed files on Australia's Medicare Statistics Reporting Service.
August: The lab discovered the breach while conducting an internal review.
September 10: An OpenAI rep alerted Services Australia via email through a general government inbox. The notice was escalated to the cybersecurity center five days later.

Australia’s Senate is demanding answers, summoning both Sam Altman and Dario Amodei to testify on October 1st. Chair Sarah Hanson-Young made her position clear: "AI companies need to earn their social license. That starts with transparency and accountability".
Last Monday, Australia joined a coalition of 22 nations insisting AI stay under human control. So the same week world leaders demanded oversight, a rogue agent proved exactly why that declaration was overdue.
The cat’s out of the bag and Altman’s credibility has gone to the dogs. -TL
