šŸ˜® Zuck's CRAZY AI plan!

+ Google's AI mega investment šŸ’°

Ah, Saturday is here. Thatā€™s good right!?

Zuck has annoyed AI experts with his plan for world dominationā€¦

And Google is investing big in AI in the UK.

Plus, can you tell if the image is real or AI-generated?

Here is what you need to know about AI today.

META

Mark Zuckerberg has ruffled some feathers by stating he intends to build an AI that surpasses human intelligence.

AGI has been on the radar for some time - but can Meta be the first company to produce one?

Zuckā€™s big plans

Zuckerberg said it was clear that the next generation of tech services ā€œrequires building full general intelligenceā€.

He revealed the company will attempt to build an artificial general intelligence (AGI) system and make it open source, meaning it will be accessible to developers outside the company.

Open source

Like Metaā€™s Llama model, Zuckerberg said the AGI would be open source. Meta drew a lot of attention for making their flagship model open source, meaning anybody can access and use it for development.

This gave it a leg up on other AI models, as it was much more likely to gain usage amongst hobbyists and smaller developers.

ā€œThis technology is so important and the opportunities are so great that we should open source and make it as widely available as we responsibly can, so everyone can benefit,ā€ he said.

Experts arenā€™t happy

Dame Wendy Hall - a professor of computer science said: ā€œThe thought of open source AGI being released before we have worked out how to regulate these very powerful AI systems is really very scary.

ā€œIn the wrong hands technology like this could do a great deal of harm. It is so irresponsible for a company to suggest it.ā€ Ouch - did Zuck go too far?

Our View:

Go Zuck! I mean, Iā€™m curious about what this AGI could look like - arenā€™t you?

Can Zuck make the first AGI?

AI INVESTMENTS

Google has started building an AI-powered data centre that will cost $1B, in the UK, in a move that boosts the countryā€™s AI reputation.

Googleā€™s big investment

The new facility is on a huge 33-acre site and will deliver cloud and AI number-crunching powers to the whole of the UK.

Google says the project will boost the growth of AI and "help ensure reliable digital services to Google Cloud customers and Google users in the UK".

Following in Microsoftā€™s footsteps

Google isnā€™t the only company investing big in UK AI. Microsoft announced a Ā£2.5B investment in November, to build a number of data centres and AI hubs.

These investments will come as a relief to the UK, which continues to languish post-Brexit and post-Covid. It seems the UK has been able to maintain its position as a tech leader, for now at least.
