🤤 WILL AI MAKE US STUPID?

A Guardian article today discusses the possibility that AI will make us all stupid. While this might seem far-fetched and yet more doomerism (and actually the author offers the alternative view), when I think about the impact of smartphones, I dread to think what AI could lead to.

I was lucky enough to be born in an era where I grew up reading as a child, with smartphones taking off when I was in secondary (high) school. (sorry if that makes some readers feel old!) These days kids just watch tik-toks before bed. Now I know I sound like “old man yells at cloud” but I think its obvious attention spans have really suffered from the propagation of smartphones and social media.

Will AI make this even worse? With AI doing all of our “thinking”, will we suffer for it? Is Idiocracy about to come true? We need to be careful and ensure AI leads us to greater things and not into decline. In other words - AI for education, not custom-generated short videos designed to suck our attention away from reality.

📖 EXPERT PROMPT TIPS

Get better at using the AI tools that matter with our regular prompt tips.

Proof for me, please.

You can get ChatGPT to proofread text for you. Better yet, you can ask it to print the changes it makes in a bullet point list. This one is super helpful!

💻 YESTERDAY’S COMMENTS

In your newsletter you write - Utilise conversation history. In a long conversation, referencing previous messages can help maintain context and improve the model's understanding. You can refer to specific parts of the conversation to avoid repetition or confusion.

Could you give an example?

Rob

Sure thing Rob!

Let’s say I ask ChatGPT to write me a blog post about marketing online and it does. Then I ask it to write some social media messages to promote it. Then I ask it to write a thank you note to my Grandma for the £20 she sent me.

Now I’m looking back at my blog and realise I want it to be shorter and contain keywords about e-commerce.

I simply say “Rewrite the blog you wrote earlier, but add keywords about e-commerce and condense it” Voila! Chat knows exactly what you mean and will rewrite its earlier input. You can even say “three messages ago” If you’ve got a lot going on in one chat window.

Hope that helped!

👨🏼‍💻 AI CREATING NEW SECURITY THREATS

AI is being used by scammers to create more sophisticated phishing and fraud scams, in what is bad news for all of us. As scams get more advanced, the number of people who will fall victim and be tricked will only increase.

AI data is incredibly helpful to nefarious actors, and Meta’s 65-billion parameter language model recently got leaked, which will undoubtedly lead to new and improved phishing attacks.

By having access to this kind of data, evil geniuses can engineer prompts and other attacking methods aimed at extracting sensitive data. This creates a whole new type of scam.

Whoops, your AI bot accidentally gave your credit card details to that prompt hacker. Damn.
