AI EDUCATION

Tech companies are being urged to develop AI tools to help reduce teachers’ workloads.

The UK government is supporting this by giving AI developers special access to the Department for Education’s (DfE) resources.

Education minister Stephen Morgan called this a major step forward for AI in education.

The government is investing £3 million to create a “content bank” of official assessments, curriculum guides, and teaching materials.

This will help developers train AI models to produce accurate, high-quality workbooks and lesson plans tailored for English classrooms.

Here are some facts to keep in mind:

  • £3 million to fund a DfE content bank for AI classroom tools.

  • £1 million for a competition to create AI tools that reduce teacher workloads.

  • AI is seen as a helpful tool, not a replacement for teachers.

Teachers pet?

In addition, £1 million will be awarded in a competition to develop AI tools that focus on tasks like feedback and marking, to launch by March 2025.

Morgan emphasised that AI, when safe and reliable, can support teachers and ease their workload.

However, experts stress that AI should complement, not replace, the essential human touch in education.

Pepe Di’lasio, General Secretary of the Association of School and College Leaders, acknowledged that AI could help reduce the overwhelming burden on teachers, provided its reliability issues are addressed.

He noted that AI is a tool, not a replacement for the expertise teachers bring to their students.

Chris Goodall, a teacher and head of digital education at the Bourne Education Trust, has been using AI to create classroom materials since November 2022.

He found that AI has helped improve lessons and reduce admin work across 26 schools, giving teachers more time to focus on students and provide personalised feedback.

Can it give you a detention though?

AI GOVERNANCE

OpenAI and Anthropic have agreed to let the US government review their new AI models before public release to enhance safety.

The companies signed agreements with the US AI Safety Institute, allowing the government to assess and reduce any safety risks.

This effort includes collaboration with a similar UK agency to provide feedback on safety improvements.

Here’s what you should know:

  • OpenAI and Anthropic are sharing AI models with the US government for safety checks.

  • California’s new AI safety bill requires companies to adopt safety measures before training advanced models.

  • The White House has secured voluntary AI safety commitments from major firms.

Striking the right balance

This move comes as governments explore how to regulate AI without stifling innovation.

California recently passed the Safe and Secure Innovation for Frontier Artificial Intelligence Models Act (SB 1047), requiring AI companies to implement safety measures before training advanced models.

However, companies like OpenAI and Anthropic warn that it could harm smaller developers.

The bill is awaiting Governor Gavin Newsom’s signature.

Meanwhile, the White House has secured voluntary commitments from major AI firms, including investments in cybersecurity, addressing discrimination, and developing ways to watermark AI-generated content.

Elizabeth Kelly, director of the US AI Safety Institute, called these agreements “an important milestone” in guiding AI’s responsible future.

Well that ought to ease some worries.
