REDDIT

Reddit shares have jumped 11% after announcing a partnership with OpenAI.

The deal allows OpenAI to use Reddit content to train its AI models.

OpenAI will access Reddit’s data API, providing real-time, unique content for AI training.

In return, Reddit will introduce AI features for users and moderators, with OpenAI becoming a Reddit advertising partner.

In February, Google made a similar deal, using Reddit content for its AI models like Gemini.

Reddit’s CEO, Steve Huffman, highlighted the platform’s extensive archive of genuine human conversations, which will improve ChatGPT, and whatever else OpenAI is cooking up.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, a major Reddit shareholder, supports the collaboration, stressing its benefits.

What you should know:

  • OpenAI accesses Reddit’s data API for unique, real-time content.

  • Reddit will offer AI features powered by OpenAI and gains an advertising partner.

  • Similar partnerships include Google’s use of Reddit content for AI models.

OpenAI, a gift that keeps on giving

OpenAI recently launched a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT, featuring GPT-o4, which is faster and better with text, video and audio.

Reddit’s shares have been boosted by this partnership and a general rise in “meme stocks” like GameStop.

After going public in March, Reddit’s stock is nearing its peak.

This partnership marks a significant step for both Reddit and OpenAI, promising improved AI capabilities and new features for users.

Who knew Reddit memes could power the next-gen AI? Looks like cats and conspiracy theories are finally paying off!

AI BREAKTHROUGH

Artificial intelligence has made impressive strides, but can it master sarcasm?

Researchers in the Netherlands think so.

They've created an AI sarcasm detector, pushing the boundaries of machine understanding.

Matt Coler from the University of Groningen's speech technology lab believes recognising sarcasm is crucial for seamless human-machine communication.

Sarcasm is a subtle, yet significant, part of our daily interactions.

Coler points out that while humans (except Americans) can naturally spot sarcasm, AI needs multiple cues to do the same.

At a recent conference in Ottawa, Xiyuan Gao, a PhD student, explained how their AI was trained using text, audio, and emotional content from TV shows like "Friends" and "The Big Bang Theory."

The AI achieved a 75% accuracy rate in detecting sarcasm.

Further research aims to improve this using synthetic data and visual cues like facial expressions.

Here are the key bits:

  • AI Sarcasm Detector: Developed by Dutch researchers, trained on TV shows.

  • 75% Accuracy: Achieved in detecting sarcasm from text and audio.

  • Future Improvements: Including visual cues to enhance accuracy and detect negative tones.

How snarky are we talking?

Shekhar Nayak, another researcher, noted that this technology could also help detect negative tones, abuse, and hate speech in language.

Making programmes more familiar with how humans really speak should help people converse with devices more naturally, Coler adds, but he wonders what will happen if machines embrace their newfound skills and start throwing sarcasm back at us.

“If I ask: ‘Do you have time for a question?’ And it says: ‘Yeah, sure,’ I might think: well does it or doesn’t it?”
