😮 OpenAI's unprecedented legal response!

+ An AI... cat flap? 🐱

Sponsored by

Tuesday comes rolling on in again!

OpenAI has dropped an incredible response to the copyright criticism it is facing…

And there’s a new AI-powered… cat flap?

Here is what you need to know about AI today.

Read time: 5 minutes

OpenAI has officially responded to growing criticism over copyright. The UK’s communications and digital select committee is probing them… and their official response is…

“We know we break copyright laws, but we have to!”

OpenAI is saying it is “impossible” to create something like ChatGPT without infringing copyright.

Have you ever seen such a ballsy defence as that?

In a written submission to the House of Lords, OpenAI made the claim it simply couldn’t create such tools without copyrighted material.

How will the house respond?

What did they say exactly?

Here’s the key part of their submission:

“Because copyright today covers virtually every sort of human expression – including blog posts, photographs, forum posts, scraps of software code, and government documents – it would be impossible to train today’s leading AI models without using copyrighted materials”

It looks like OpenAI has made the decision to try and change the very nature of copyright laws, rather than defend themselves by saying they did not breach them.

This is truly fascinating!

The AI copyright war has just begun - can OpenAI change the very idea of copyright with their defence?

Can Perplexity eventually compete with Google?

Yes, it’s the future - 57%

No, impossible - 43%

Our Reader’s Thoughts

“Google search results are little more than ads, ads, and more ads. By the time you get past looking at the ads, the actual search results are not that impressive. They are vulnerable to the right competitor.” - charlie

“It is neither doing better than Google nor doing better than ChatGPT. It has more way to go before it can compete better. Monetizing search could be another challenge when people are used to free search. Assuming Google will let someone take their market share so easily is also wrong.” - amit

Ever dream of artificial intelligence powering your… cat flap?

Me neither, but a new AI cat flap promises to stop your cat from bringing you dead gifts!

How does it work?

A motion sensor and night vision camera are equipped on the external side of the door.

The cat flap has been trained on a large dataset of cats, types of prey, and much more - meaning if a cat approaches with something in its mouth, the door remains locked.

Although this may sound cruel, you can easily manually lock and unlock the door and turn off the prey-detection setting.

Training your cat

The creators claim that it will slowly train your cat not to enter your home with lovely…. gifts!

Sounds smart to me.

The detection system is accurate more than 90% of the time, although smart cats may figure out they can simply drop the prey to unlock the door… pick it up and re-enter.

This will be no match for smart cats… fellow cat owners I’m sure you’ll agree.
