OPENAI

From big dreams to big tech - the story of OpenAI

AI is everywhere right now. It’s the newest and coolest kid on the block. And it all started with ChatGPT.

Remember how mind-blown you were the first time you used it? OpenAI changed everything and opened Pandora’s box.

It was a long time coming. Back in 2015, Elon Musk, Sam Altman and others founded OpenAI as an AI research lab.

Supported by Silicon Valley's elite and armed with a dream team of engineers and scientists, OpenAI quickly made its mark.

The start of something big

OpenAI began with a grand ambition: to make AI accessible and beneficial for everyone.

Backed by a whopping $1 billion from visionaries, the group set out to make AI the next big thing.

The early days saw groundbreaking projects like the OpenAI Gym and Universe, tools that revolutionised AI learning and application.

Notably, OpenAI Five, an AI that mastered the complex game of Dota 2, showed how smart AI can be at planning and strategy. This single task required renting 128,000 CPUs and 256 GPUs from Google’s DeepMind team for weeks!

2019 marked a pivotal shift. With a $1 billion boost from Microsoft, OpenAI transitioned to a “profit-capped” model - an attempt to create a productive for-profit business while sticking to its open-source and non-profit roots.

Microsoft’s big impact

Teaming up with Microsoft led to the development of GPT-2 in 2019 - the ancestor of ChatGPT, the first model able to output human-like language.

GPT-3 came out in 2020 to fanfare amongst AI enthusiasts, but the hype was contained in the niche AI community. DALL-E followed in 2021 (it’s older than ChhtGPT!) with similar results.

While OpenAI was winning plaudits with AI researchers, they still hadn’t hit the public consciousness - yet.

ChatGPT changes everything

ChatGPT launched in November 2022, and nothing has ever been the same.

The free preview quickly drew a million signups and great media attention. Everyone was talking about ChatGPT.

OpenAI had officially opened the doors to AI for the general public.

GPT-4 followed along with a paid subscription model, and suddenly OpenAI had millions in monthly recurring revenue, solidifying it as the first AI tech giant.

The road ahead

As OpenAI continues to evolve, balancing innovation with ethical considerations and its founding mission will be important.

All eyes are on OpenAI - and the pressure is on to show the world how to bring AI to market responsibly, keeping a keen eye on ethics to make sure these advances help everyone, not just a few.

It's important for OpenAI to keep the conversation going with everyone else - like their recent initiates with other AI companies to try and tag AI imagery, and block content that could influence elections.

OpenAI and Microsoft have the chance to lead the charge, showing that tech giants can indeed put the world's well-being at the heart of the AI revolution.
