META

Recently, Meta's AI image maker has been acting up, showing some odd behaviour when creating images of people from different races.

At first, it was turning everyone Asian, no matter what the prompt said.

Then, suddenly, it stopped making Asian people in images at all, even when asked to.

This situation got people scratching their heads about how well the AI understands and shows racial diversity.

Remember the Gemini incident?

Google suffered similar issues, with its diverse imagery confusing everyone when it showed Asian nazis when asked for pictures of German WW2 soldiers. Going deeper, it seems Meta is struggling all over:

Trying to make pictures of people from various racial backgrounds also hit a snag, with error messages popping up instead of images.

Despite media outlets reaching out, Meta has been silent on the issue so far… so we don’t know what's happening behind the scenes.

Here's the gist of it:

  • Meta's AI couldn't keep its image-making consistent, messing up racial identities now and then.

  • This problem points out how tricky it is for AI to get human diversity right.

  • It's crucial for AI makers like Meta to be open about fixing these issues, ensuring everyone is represented correctly in AI-made images.

The whole situation shows that AI technology is still figuring out how to handle the complex topic of race.

Maybe AI should stick to cat pictures for now. Seems a little confused about the whole human race thing.

Should AI developers prioritise fixing racial bias in AI-generated images?

AI COOL

In our world where smartphones are everywhere, Terra offers a breath of fresh air.

This small device, created by Modem Works and Panter & Tourron, is a compass for the modern age.

It uses gentle vibrations and an arrow to guide you on custom walks - created by AI - based on the user’s prompts - like a scenic tour in Kyoto or a leisurely walk through Marais with a stop for pastries.

The best part? You can leave your phone behind and just enjoy the moment.

Here's what makes Terra special:

  • Terra creates unique walk routes for you, using simple signals to guide the way. It's all about exploring without staring at your phone.

  • Inspired by outdoor gear and peaceful vibes, Terra stands out from typical tech gadgets. It feels more like a relaxing object than just another device.

  • Terra is open for anyone to tinker with. Its design and software are shared online, so you can make it your own or even help improve it.

Terra’s look and feel go against the usual tech vibe.

Forget your fitness tracker, get a Terra!

It's made to be both useful and calming, like those stress-relief stones or toys you fidget with.

The design is simple and unobtrusive, focusing on what's essential and keeping distractions away.

The heart of Terra is its open-source software, blending technology with your needs to map out the perfect route.

You can set it up yourself, and even 3D print the device’s casing.

Terra isn’t just another gadget; it’s an invitation to see the world differently, to step away from screens and connect with what’s around you in a more meaningful way.

Where has this been ALL OUR LIVES?!
