NASA's got a futuristic concept on the drawing board that sounds straight out of sci-fi: a solar gravitational lens mission. They want to use the sun's gravity as a gigantic magnifying glass. This could amp up the light from distant celestial objects, potentially letting us peek at exoplanets up close and personal, revealing details of their surfaces like never before.

TODAY:

  • Meta - Your AI assistants are here!

  • AI Eye diagnosis - Will probably replace your favourite eye doctor soon.

  • Around the web: Tesla is recalling a lot of Cybertrucks for mechanical issues.

META AI

Meta is stepping up its AI game by incorporating its AI assistant across its platforms like Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

You’ll be able to instantly generate images inside all of your messaging apps - that means custom memes, people.

The launch of Llama 3, Meta's latest open-source model, is a key part of this effort.

Llama 3 excels in coding and other tasks, setting new industry standards for performance.

  • Meta’s AI assistant is now easier to access and use worldwide, directly integrated into Meta’s major platforms.

  • Llama 3 introduces improved functionalities and is available to developers, showcasing Meta's commitment to enhancing open-source AI.

  • Meta is planning ongoing improvements and aiming to lead globally in AI, despite the rapid pace of technology development.

This advanced assistant is not just available on a new standalone website at Meta.ai, but also features upgraded real-time search using Bing and Google, along with better image generation capabilities.

Setting the bar REALLY high

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is trying to make Meta’s AI assistant the top choice globally.

It’s now available in English in numerous countries, targeting Meta's massive daily user base of over 3 billion people.

As the AI landscape evolves quickly, Meta is also sharing its technology with developers by releasing two versions of Llama 3.

This supports the wider AI community and keeps Meta competitive.

Despite fast-moving developments and potential new releases from rivals like OpenAI, Zuckerberg’s approach is focused on steady, strategic advancements in AI.

Zuck was really like: “YOU GET AN ASSISTANT, AND YOU GET AN ASSISTANT, AND YOU GET AN ASSISTANT”

AI HEALTHCARE

Recent studies show OpenAI's GPT-4 model almost matches expert eye doctors in diagnosing and treating eye conditions.

The research involved testing GPT-4 against various medical professionals, including junior and specialist ophthalmologists, across 87 patient scenarios.

The results revealed that GPT-4 outperformed junior doctors and was on par with many specialists, showcasing its strong knowledge base and ability to handle complex medical situations.

Notably, the AI excelled in both simple recall tasks and more complex reasoning tasks.

This flexibility in tackling various diagnostic challenges highlights its wide-ranging abilities, setting it apart from earlier AI that targeted more limited tasks.

An AI Ophthalmoscope?

However, moving AI technologies like GPT-4 into clinical practice needs careful handling.

The AI's potential to help in patient triage and in areas with limited specialist access is clear, but the risks of incorrect diagnoses call for a cautious approach.

What you should know:

  • OpenAI's GPT-4 approaches the diagnostic skills of specialist eye doctors.

  • The AI shows strong performance across both basic and complex diagnostic tasks.

  • Introducing AI into clinical settings requires balancing capability expansion with risk management.

This research points towards a promising future for AI in medicine but emphasises the need for careful implementation to maximise benefits and risks.
