THE CHIP WARS

Intel's CEO Pat Gelsinger has unveiled major updates to their AI product range, targeting less expensive AI hardware and challenging NVIDIA's dominance.

Intel's Gaudi 3 AI accelerator is set to transform the AI hardware market.

At Computex, Intel revealed that the Gaudi 3, in an 8,192-accelerator cluster, can provide up to 40 per cent faster training time compared to an equivalent NVIDIA H100 GPU cluster.

Faster, Cheaper - Nvidia are you watching?

For smaller clusters of 64 accelerators, Gaudi 3 boasts a 15 per cent faster training throughput on the LLAMA2-70B model.

Additionally, it promises an average of up to 2.2x faster inferencing for popular large language models like LLAMA-70B and Mistral-7B.

One of the most striking aspects of this announcement is the pricing strategy.

The standard AI kit, which includes eight Intel Gaudi 2 accelerators with a universal baseboard (UBB), is priced at $65,000—approximately one-third the cost of comparable competitive platforms.

The Gaudi 3 kit, featuring eight accelerators with a UBB, will list at $125,000, around two-thirds the cost of competing systems.

This aggressive pricing strategy aims to make high-performance AI more accessible to a broader range of organisations.

On top, Intel’s new Lunar Lake CPU architecture marks a major leap in their SoC design, setting the stage for future laptops and desktops.

Built with the latest client compute CPU, GPU, and NPU engines, Lunar Lake aims to deliver cutting-edge AI experiences with impressive power efficiency.

The future of data centres?

You can expect Lunar Lake to power the largest number of AI PCs in the industry, delivering best-in-class power, with up to 40 per cent lower processor power usage in real-life applications.

From an AI perspective, the platform is expected to achieve up to 120 TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second), a key metric for AI.

The launch of Intel Xeon 6 processors brings a versatile solution to data centre customers, catering to a wide range of needs from high AI performance to exceptional efficiency and cloud scalability.

These processors feature new Performance-core (P-core) and Efficient-core (E-core) SKUs, providing flexibility to meet diverse organisational requirements.

The Xeon 6 E-core is expected to deliver high-core density and exceptional performance per watt, significantly enhancing data centre capabilities for AI workloads.

Here’s what you should know about Gaudi 3 AI Accelerator:

  • Up to 40 per cent faster training time compared to NVIDIA H100.

  • Priced significantly lower than competing systems.

  • Strong collaboration with top global system providers.

Intel’s latest offerings are set to reshape the AI and data centre landscape, making advanced AI technologies more accessible and efficient.

Nvidia just started sweating.

SONOS

Sonos' new Ace headphones, priced at $449, are set to launch on June 5th.

Reviews are coming in - despite the promising hardware design and premium feel, the overall execution appears rushed and unfinished.

The design of the Ace headphones is sleek and sophisticated.

They are apparently comfortable to wear, with premium materials and a compact, felt-covered case.

The lightweight construction makes them suitable for long periods of use, and the physical controls are intuitive and easy to use.

Throwing sound around

The standout feature of the Ace headphones is TV Audio Swap, which allows users to transfer sound from a Sonos Arc soundbar to the headphones instantly.

This feature enhances private listening with spatial audio and head tracking, creating an immersive experience.

However, this feature is currently limited to iOS users and requires an $800 soundbar, meaning most users won’t be able to use it.

Here are the key highlights:

  • TV Audio Swap: Innovative but buggy, limited to iOS and expensive soundbar.

  • Design & Comfort: Sleek, lightweight, and comfortable with intuitive controls.

  • Challenges: Inconsistent features, limited compatibility, and rushed release.

Comfort and class, but lacking polish

Overall, reviews state the headphones feel unfinished, with crucial features still pending and an undercooked app experience contributing to a sense of a rushed release.

The Sonos Ace headphones show promise with their design and sound quality but need further refinement and feature completion to fully compete with established brands.

I’ll stick with my gramophone.
