Google has introduced Gemini Code Assist for Individuals, a free AI-powered tool that helps developers write and debug code.

The company has also launched Gemini Code Assist for GitHub, an AI assistant that reviews code for bugs and suggests fixes directly within GitHub.

The key features:

  • AI chat for coding: Developers can chat with Gemini Code Assist in natural language to get explanations, fix errors, or complete code. It integrates with VS Code and JetBrains.

  • Higher free usage limits: The tool offers 180,000 code completions per month, far more than GitHub Copilot’s free plan, plus 240 daily chat requests.

  • Larger context window: With a 128,000-token limit, it can process bigger codebases in one go, making it more effective for complex projects.

  • Free public preview available: Developers can sign up now to try it.

GitHub Copilot, you good?

Gemini Code Assist for GitHub automatically scans pull requests, identifying bugs and suggesting improvements.

These new tools show Google’s growing focus on AI-powered developer tools, competing with Microsoft and GitHub.

Google has been selling enterprise versions of Gemini Code Assist for a year, with integrations for GitLab, GitHub, and Google Docs.

GitHub Copilot might need to enter its villain era.
