🐕 CAN AI HELP US TALK TO ANIMALS?
We have all fantasised once or twice about speaking to animals. Maybe after watching Doctor Doolittle? Well, due to the wonders of Artificial Intelligence, this crazy dream might be a bit closer than you think.
Yesterday, the BBC interviewed Professor Yossi Yovel of Tel Aviv University, otherwise known as "The Bat Whisperer". Yossi and his team are utilising AI to learn and understand what the bats are saying.
Now, this is no easy process as AI requires a large quantity of data. So the team set about creating it. At the University colony, the bats are recorded around the clock. Eventually, the team started to differentiate between sounds. They identified "eating sounds" and "mating sounds", and taught the computer how to define between them.
Next, they created a voice recognition programme, to "decode" the screeches, and were shocked by what they found. The language is much more complex than they previously considered. Bats have complex arguments about food, can distinguish between genders, and even have names!
Yossi and his team are bringing us closer to understanding the language of animals. I am getting goosebumps just writing these words.
I wonder if I'll ever be able to talk to my dog, Ruby...

💀 AI RESURRECTING THE DEAD?
At the weekend I spent some time thinking about life and death. I have been lucky to know many wonderful people, but unfortunate to witness some of them passing.
Dotted throughout Human history there are countless tales of resurrection. We have Jesus in the bible, Satyavan in Indian culture, and Achilles in Greek history. But we have never cracked it, people just die.
Now, you might be expecting me to announce that AI has saved us from death! Unfortunately not, but something similar...
In China, Yu Jialin created an AI "grief bot", with the personality and memory of his grandfather. He used old letters, photos and videos to feed a language model.
Finally, 12 years after his grandfather died, they spoke again (kind of).
This technology is not yet commercialised, but with the pace of change in this industry, it could be soon. Is that a good thing?
I find this application particularly difficult to wrap my head around. It could offer great comfort to grieving loved ones, but would it stop them from moving on?
