Google DeepMind has made a “huge leap” with the launch of AlphaFold3, a new version of its AI tool that upgrades our understanding of protein behaviour. The new tool promises to unlock the “secrets of biology”.

Developed with Isomorphic Labs, this innovation marks a significant step in computational biology and could transform fields from healthcare to agriculture.

AlphaFold3 advances beyond its predecessors by predicting not only the 3D structures of proteins but also their interactions with various molecules and ions.

This insight is key as it affects biological functions and the development of diseases within organisms.

With accuracy rates between 62% and 76%, the tool uses a vast global database of molecular structures to refine its predictions.

Here’s what you should know

  • AlphaFold3 improves our grasp of protein interactions, crucial for both health and disease.

  • It offers potential advancements in medical treatments, crop resilience, and new materials.

  • Despite progress, its predictions still need validation through traditional lab experiments, highlighting the ongoing need for empirical research.

Researchers are already using AlphaFold3 to explore cellular functions and pathways related to diseases, hoping for breakthroughs that could lead to more effective treatments and a deeper understanding of biological systems.

For example, structural biologists are investigating how bacteria use their flagellum to move and attach to tissues, which could lead to new antibiotics.

But it has its limitations

It struggles with predicting changes in protein behaviour in response to environmental changes within living systems, an area needing more study.

Although the AI provides detailed insights into molecular interactions, the accuracy of these predictions must still be confirmed in the lab.

In short, AlphaFold3 is poised to revolutionise our approach to biological research, pushing forward innovations across several scientific domains, yet it also underscores the essential role of traditional scientific methods.

Looks like I need a lesson in biology from AI.

Professional conmen and forgers be warned - AI is coming to get you.

Dr. Carina Popovici, an expert in art authentication, has identified up to 40 counterfeit paintings on eBay, including works falsely attributed to Monet and Renoir.

Her analysis, using sophisticated AI technology on the online marketplace's listings, showed a high likelihood that these artworks are forgeries.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • Advanced AI is being used to spot fake art on platforms like eBay, with up to 40 dubious listings identified.

  • Despite eBay’s robust policies against counterfeit sales, controlling online art markets remains a challenge.

  • AI is increasingly pivotal in art authentication, offering precise tools for analysing fine details of artworks.

Monet? More like Faux-net!

This technology, developed in collaboration with Liverpool University and Tilburg University, employs neural networks to scrutinise brushstrokes and colour palettes.

This method has not only flagged fakes but also questioned the authenticity of several historic artworks, changing the landscape of art authentication.

Despite eBay's strict enforcement against counterfeit sales and the use of advanced AI and expert investigators, the recurring listings of counterfeit art highlight ongoing challenges in online art commerce.

eBay's proactive measures, including the removal of flagged listings, underscore their commitment, yet the ongoing presence of counterfeit art points to larger challenges in digital marketplaces.

Imagine if that pride and joy hanging above your mantel piece is a phoney.
