AI ETHICS

For years, tech experts have debated whether companies should keep their computer code secret or share it with developers globally.

This debate has intensified with the rapid advancement of AI and its implications for national security.

In an open letter, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, advocated for open-source AI development, arguing that it would democratise AI knowledge and innovation.

He emphasised that keeping AI tech secret is unrealistic, especially given the history of espionage targeting Silicon Valley.

Zuck’s key points:

  • Open-source AI could foster global prosperity and safety.

  • Restricting AI research might stifle American innovation.

  • Meta’s new AI algorithm, LLaMA, supports seven additional languages, including Hindi, French and Spanish.

Just a fancy idea?

Zuckerberg believes open-source AI will make the world more prosperous and secure, countering the idea that restricting AI research will protect American innovation.

Meta recently released LLaMA, its most advanced AI algorithm, and expanded its AI assistant to support seven additional languages, including Hindi, French, and Spanish.

This stance comes amid the Biden administration's efforts to regulate AI.

Last year, President Biden called for more safeguards around AI, and the Commerce Department has sought feedback on draft proposals.

While companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google argue that AI should be tightly controlled, Zuckerberg and others believe open-source AI allows for better oversight and safer deployment.

Zuckerberg’s advocacy isn’t purely altruistic, it also aligns with Meta’s interests in promoting its technology and reducing reliance on competitors like Apple and Google.

ADOBE

Adobe is rolling out new AI tools for Illustrator and Photoshop, designed to streamline creative workflows.

The key updates for Illustrator come from Adobe’s latest Firefly Vector AI model, now in public beta.

Here’s what they’re adding:

  • Generative Shape Fill: Adds detailed vectors to shapes using text prompts.

  • Text to Pattern: Creates scalable, custom vector patterns.

  • Style Reference: Generates outputs that match existing styles.

Firefly leads the charge

Other notable Illustrator features include a Dimension tool for automatic sizing info, a Mockup feature for 3D product previews, and Retype for editable text from static images.

Photoshop also sees improvements.

The Generate Image feature, powered by Firefly Image 3 Model, is now available in both the desktop and web apps.

The Enhance Detail feature provides greater sharpness and detail for large images using Generative Fill.

The Selection Brush tool allows users to easily select and separate objects by painting over them.

These updates are part of Adobe’s broader push into generative AI, which began last year with the introduction of the Firefly model.

Adobe insists its Firefly models are trained ethically on licensed content from its stock platform.

However, a recent policy update clarification ensures customer projects won’t be used for AI training.

Despite these assurances, some creative professionals worry that automating design tasks could reduce job opportunities.
