APPLE AI

At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled "Apple Intelligence," a suite of AI features for iPhone, Mac, and more.

These updates aim to make Siri more conversational, introduce AI-generated "Genmoji," and integrate GPT-4o for complex queries.

Here are the updates:

  • A more conversational Siri, can reference multiple apps and manage notifications. Users can type or speak to Siri for interactions.

  • Custom AI-generated emojis and a new image creation tool are available in various apps.

  • Improved object search and features like Magic Eraser to remove unwanted elements from photos.

Apple's AI features will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and newer iPads or Macs with M1 chips or later, and in English.

These features will start rolling out in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this autumn.

Apple said its AI will perform actions across apps, handle notifications, and write or summarise text in various apps.

You can also adjust the tone of your writing with a simple prompt.

The AI can reference one app to operate in another, such as playing a podcast your partner sent you.

Siri's new "onscreen awareness" will enable it to understand your requests and take actions within more apps over time, including third-party ones.

You'll be able to type to Siri, not just talk.

Privacy is a priority. Most features will work on-device, but complex requests will use "Private Cloud Compute."

Apple assures that no data is stored or accessible on their servers, and independent experts can inspect the code to verify privacy.

Let the emoji creation BEGIN

"Genmoji" will create custom emojis on the fly.

A new "Image Playground" feature will generate images within its own app and other apps, with an API for developers to use.

AI in the Photos app will improve search functions and add features similar to Google’s Magic Eraser, allowing you to erase unwanted elements from photos.

ChatGPT, powered by GPT-4o, will be integrated into iOS, macOS, and iPadOS later this year.

Siri will use it when needed, asking for permission first. ChatGPT will also be available in systemwide AI writing tools, and user data won’t be stored.

No account or payment is needed to use ChatGPT, but subscribers can use paid features through Apple’s integration.

Siri’s makeover was not on my Bingo card for 2024.

AI BREAKTHROUGH

If you’ve always wondered exactly what your furry friend has been trying to say to you, soon you might have the answers.

A new AI tool is trying to decode dog’s barks so that we can understand better what they are trying to communicate to us.

AI systems can distinguish nuances in tone, pitch and accent, which in turn enables technologies such as voice-recognition software.

These systems were turned instead to dog barks - to see if the models were effective at non-human communication.

Here’s what you should know:

  • Researchers analysed 74 dog barks.

  • The AI was 70% accurate across various tests.

  • The implications could be huge for animal welfare.

A lot of info in one bark

The researchers are also seeing if barks can differentiate dogs’ age, gender and breed.

They fed 74 different barks into a machine-learning algorithm, and found it was 70% accurate at identifying what the dogs were communicating.

This was using a model designed around human speech. If a larger database of dog barks was created, it stands to reason the results could be even more accurate.

Great, but I’ll stick to using my dog voice. Who’s a good boy!
