A new report has shined some light on whether AI really is causing job losses or not, and what this means going forward - and it’s not as straightforward as it may seem.
The headlines
According to a recent report of 750 business leaders using AI from ResumeBuilder, 37% say the technology replaced workers in 2023. Meanwhile, 44% report that there will be layoffs in 2024 resulting from AI efficiency.“
However, the research may not accurately reflect the broader business landscape.
Without the nuance behind the prediction numbers, experts have said the statistics marking and predicting AI-induced layoffs reflect fear more than reality.
“There are still so many traditional organizations and small businesses that do not embrace technology the way that some of the larger companies do,” Said Julia Toothacre, one of the publishers of the report.
In addition, Asana’s State of AI at Work 2023 report, employees say that 29% of their work tasks are replaceable by AI. However, Asana is a proponent of what it calls “human-centered AI,” which seeks to enhance human abilities and collaboration, not replace people outright.
Fearing this about AI? It may not be true…
Is losing your job to AI inevitable?
No!
Mark Cenedella says that being a modern white-collar professional bears a level of personal responsibility. “Part of your job is to keep developing new skills,” he said. “If you learned some software five years ago, that’s not enough. You’ve got to learn new software today.”
In other words, stay on top of AI to stop it from getting on top of you!

👨🏻⚖️ GOOGLE SUED OVER AI
Google has been sued in a new class action lawsuit by news publishers.
They claim AI is having a severe impact on their revenue, with AI being listed as one of the key factors.
What have they done?
The lawsuit accuses Google and its parent company Alphabet of anticompetitive behaviour in violation of U.S. antitrust law, the Sherman Act, and others, on behalf of news publishers.
The case argues that Google “siphons off” news publishers’ content, their readers and ad revenue through anticompetitive means.
It also specifically cites AI like Google’s Search Generative Experience and Bard AI chatbot as worsening the problem.
The complaint argues that Google is “starving the free press” by sharing publishers’ content on Google, losing them “billions of dollars.”
